Better than a puzzle. Dust-off a childhood hobby and get motoring fill with these eight cool LEGO car and bike kits you can build…two of ‘em can be driven. Sort of.
With it likely that we’ll be social distancing for another month (at least) and with you probably having binged all the TV shows you can possibly stream, cleaned your car three times, and maybe even had a crack at rotating the tyres, chances are you’re getting a little bored.
We looked through the LEGO catalogue and picked out a handful of kits for motoring enthusiasts and a bonus one that’ll be available online from June – scroll to the bottom of the yarn for that one.
One or two of the kits are relatively simple to build while others will take a good chunk of your undivided attention. And two of them can be driven via your phone. Like most things these days, the kits aren’t cheap but if you’re an enthusiast then you’ll probably end up displaying them somewhere in the house. Or, if you’re my son, breaking the Tie Fighter we built as soon as it was finished. Sigh. Let’s get into this.
LEGO Technic 4×4 X-treme Off-Roader – $379.99
This monster truck gets three electric motors which are controlled via the LEGO Technical Control+ app (for your smartphone). The app is pretty cool and, obviously, it allows you to drive forward, reverse, steer, accelerate, brake and traverse obstacles, it also shows speed which we’d imagine wouldn’t be super-fast. In terms of building the thing, there are 958 pieces and measures 19cm tall, 33cm long and 22cm wide. Click HERE for more.
LEGO Technic Land Rover Defender – $329.99
Couldn’t be a list of LEGO kits without the newest off-roader on the market. Developed in partnership with Land Rover, the kit contains 2573 pieces and features opening doors, working high- and low-range gears, forward-folding seats, and a replica (obviously) in-line six-cylinder engine with moving pistons, working differentials (three of them), independent suspension all around, a working winch, opening tailgate (you twist the spare wheel to open the door), removable roof rack, ladder, pannier, recovery boards and storage box. LEGO Creator Harley-Davidson Fat Boy – $159.99
Here at MotoFomo we’re for all kinds of motoring enthusiasts, whether they like four wheels or two. There are 1023 pieces in this kit which was developed in partnership with Harley-Davidson and offers solid-disc Lakester wheels, teardrop fuel tank with speedo on the tank. The Milwaukee-Eight engine has working pistons, dual exhaust pipes, moveable gear shift pedal and brake levers, kickstand and a display stand. It measures 20cm tall, 18cm wide and 33cm long. LEGO Creator Fiat 500 – $139.99
With 960 pieces the LEGO Creator Fiat 500 is as cute as a button and way more manageable than the Defender kit. Based on the Fiat 500F from the late 1960s, and comes with luggage rack with suitcase, detailed interior, and opening roof, doors, hood and tailgate. To complete the Italian theme, according to LEGO, this kit also includes a folding easel with a paintbrush, palette and small ‘painting’ of the car in front of the famous Colosseum in Rome. Okay. LEGO Speed Champions 1985 Audi Sport quattro S1 – $29.99
This is the Daddy of all Group B rally cars in my opinion. The thing was properly mental and if any classic car lends itself to recreation in LEGO, it’s this thing with its square edges, scoops and wings. This is one of the cheapest kits on our list too. There are 250 pieces in this one and while it doesn’t feature moving parts, it’s still incredibly cool. And as of January, this year (2020), these Speed Champion kits are now 25 percent bigger than they used to be. This one measures six centimetres tall, 16cm long and seven centimetres wide. LEGO Technic Dom’s Charger – $179.99
If you’re a Fast and the Furious fan then this kit is for you. Released this month (27th April 2020), it features 1077 parts and is based on the iconic 1970s Dodge Charger R/T. The bonnet lifts and shows off a model version of the Charger’s V8 engine. There are moving pistons, wishbone suspension, steering system and air blower. There are even nitro bottles in the trunk (not actual nitro – just sayin’) to bring Dom’s daring high-speed chases to life, said LEGO. The Charger measures 39cm long, 11cm tall and 16cm wide. LEGO Technic app-controlled Top Gear Rally Car – $199.99
Another app-controlled LEGO kit but this one’s a lot cheaper than the 4×4… and the fourby doesn’t come Stig-approved. LOL. There are 463 pieces in this kit and the steering and suspension all work, obviously and there’s one XL motor and one L motor as well as a Smart Hub to connect them (you’ll need six AA batteries). The LEGO Technic CONTROL+ App allows you to drive forward, reverse, steer, accelerate, brake. There are sound effects and it shows you speed and tilt angle too. LEGO Technic Ducatti Panigale V4 R – $89.99
This one will be available from 1 June and there are 646 pieces in the kit. Pub fact: this is the first model motorcycle in LEGO Technic history to include a two-speed gearbox for exploring different speeds and techniques. It comes with a kickstand, exhaust pipe, windshield and dashboard. If you’re a Ducatti fan then this is a must. It measures 32cm long, 16cm tall and eight centimetres wide. Click HERE for more.
This isn’t an exhaustive list but we wanted to include the kits available to buy at the time of writing. There are plenty of others cool kits, like the James Bond Aston Martin DB5 and the LEGO Creator Ford Mustang that were out of stock at the time of writing.
