It’s only taken BMW 20 years to realise this is the best idea it’s ever had…yep, we’ll finally see a BMW M3 Touring (station wagon to you and I).
Now I’m torn. Until now, my ideal car has always been the Audi RS4; the thinking man’s supercar. And now this thing is going to come along and turn my head. And yours too, I’m sure.
BMW has finally agreed what we’ve all known for a long time, and that is that a BMW M3 Touring is a genius idea. The bum has been teased here and BMW has said the prototype is now heading into two years of development. Indeed, it will be based at BMW’s M GmbH development centre at the Nurburgring so, expect to see plenty of spy shots.
“Whenever the prototype has been given the go-ahead for test drives on public roads, it means that the decisive step towards series maturity has been taken. Not only there will it soon be regularly sighted. As with all other BMW M models, the intensive testing and tuning process for the BMW M3 Touring will take place on the Nordschleife of the Nürburgring, because the first BMW M3 Touring is, after all, first and foremost a BMW M3,” BMW said.
Forget about the updated M3 Sedan that’ll be revealed in September (or the M4 Convertible that’s coming next year), the M3 Touring is now the only M3 that means anything.
Until now, there had only been an M5 Touring but, back in 1992 BMW revealed its E46 M3 Touring Concept (pictured). According to BMW, the aim was to prove that a wagon body could work on the M3 platform…hmm, pretty sure they only needed to look at the Audi RS4 to know that performance cars mashed into a wagon shape were/are as hot as hell.
While details are still sketchy, BMW has confirmed the M3 Touring will share the same “6-cylinder M TwinPower turbo engine” as the M3/M4. And that it will have “ 5 doors and a highly variable luggage compartment”.
“Wide axles, conspicuously large front air intakes and four exhaust tailpipes at the rear leave no doubt that the iconic M DNA will be fully perceptible despite the car’s new body design,” BMW added.
So, that’s that then. We can likely expect to see the M3 Touring some time in 2022 but this news alone is enough for me to suggest that we’re done. We don’t need any other cars now.
