We’re used to watching rally cars get air but a hypercar…doesn’t happen often and, not sure about you but it makes us smile.
Hypercars like the Bugatti Chiron Pur Sport are all about speed and so seeing one get air during testing is enough to make you weak at knees. But that’s exactly what happened when Bugatti test driver, Andy Wallace, got behind the wheel of one at Nardo recently.
Who’s Wallace? The veteran of more than 20 Le Mans races (having one it once driving a Jaguar XJR-9) and a multiple 24 Hours of Daytona winner. More than that, he’s the bloke who, last year, flogged a Bugatti Chiron Super Sport 300+ and set a new speed record of 490.484km/h.
There will only be 60 Chiron Pur Sports and they’ll cost an arm and a leg (or around $4million each). Bugatti said it’s in the final stages of testing the thing and is now just fine tuning things like the brakes, engine control system, running gear and gearbox.
“Even though I have already been doing this job for a few years, I am actually in Nardò for the first time. I like the proving ground very much, above all the handling track with its many varied corners,” said Andy Wallace.
“The fast right-left-right combinations on the demanding 6.2-kilometre long track are great fun in the Chiron Pur Sport. The shorter-ratio gearbox results in even more brutal acceleration out of the bends. The lateral acceleration potential is incredible. The Chiron Pur Sport gives the driver super direct feedback, which makes driving easier,” added a delighted Andy Wallace.
“The Chiron Pur Sport is extremely agile for driving on public roads, but it still offers enough comfort. The engineers have set up the running gear perfectly. Firm and direct, but not too hard,” he said.
We can’t wait to…hang on, forget about it, we’ll never get the chance to fang this thing. Sigh.
