With consumer confidence slumping the new car sales figures for July (released today) are, as expected, pretty grim dropping to 72,505 sales down 12.8% compared to July 2019.
With parts of the country emerging from lockdown last month (July) before the shocking Covid outbreaks that emerged at the end of the month, leading to Victoria going into its tightest lockdown of the pandemic, the new car market continued to shrink. And it likely will continue to shrink for some time. July saw 72,505 vehicles purchased which was down 12.8% compared to July 2019 (83,184 sales).
Tony Weber, chief executive of the FCAI, commented on the July results,“On a year to date basis, there were 514,920 vehicles sold to July 2020, which represents a decrease of 19.2 per cent on the same period in 2019, when sales totalled 637,650 vehicles.”
While sales were down across all categories, SUVs again dominated with 36,560 sales with LCVs realising 14,898, but it was passenger cars that took the hardest hit compared to this time last year, realising 18,149 sales (down from 25,000 last year).
The top selling vehicle for the month was the Toyota RAV4 with 4309 sales, followed by the Ford Ranger (3104 sales), Toyota HiLux (2947 sales), Toyota Corolla (2192 sales) and the Hyundai i30 (1745 sales).
