Falken has announced proof of concept for its Energy Harvester which allows it to generate and capture electricity from inside a tyre.
Falken has announced it can generate and capture electricity from inside a tyre via an Energy Harvester it has been testing since 2019. Falken’s parent company, Sumitomo Rubber Industries (SRI) has been working with Kansai University in Japan to develop a module capable of generating electricity via the rotation of a tyre.
According to SRI, the results of its research mean that it’s now capable of powering devices like Tyre Pressure Monitoring Systems (TPMS) without the need for batteries.
How does it work? A small module mounted inside the tyre captures static electricity from inside the tyre as the wheel turns, and then supplies that power to an external sensor.
“During speeds of 50km/h, the system produces over 800 microwatts of power, which is enough to activate an external sensor and achieve continuous Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) transmission,” SRI said.
