Falken has announced proof of concept for its Energy Harvester which allows it to generate and capture electricity from inside a tyre.

Falken has announced it can generate and capture electricity from inside a tyre via an Energy Harvester it has been testing since 2019. Falkenโ€™s parent company, Sumitomo Rubber Industries (SRI) has been working with Kansai University in Japan to develop a module capable of generating electricity via the rotation of a tyre.

According to SRI, the results of its research mean that itโ€™s now capable of powering devices like Tyre Pressure Monitoring Systems (TPMS) without the need for batteries.

How does it work? A small module mounted inside the tyre captures static electricity from inside the tyre as the wheel turns, and then supplies that power to an external sensor.

โ€œDuring speeds of 50km/h, the system produces over 800 microwatts of power, which is enough to activate an external sensor and achieve continuous Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) transmission,โ€ SRI said.

So, Internet thoughts on this? Seems like a great idea to us.
