It’s been the great on-again, off-again revival of an automotive icon…the return of the Stratos. Now the Ferrari F430-based new Stratos is back. Again.
The Lancia Stratos is one of the most iconic vehicles ever. A rally hero in the 1970s, the revival of the Stratos was planned way back in 2010.
A prototype was revealed and then nothing. There were teaser videos and promises of the new Stratos. Then in 2018 the new Stratos finally made it on-sale via the granting of rights to produce the car by German company, New Stratos GbR, owned by German Billionaire Michael Stoschek.
Approval was given to Manifattura Automobili Torino (MAT) to produce 25 vehicles but there’s been nothing since 2018. Well, now, finally, MAT has announced it will be presenting the new Stratos in the UK at the Salon Privé later this year (September). We’re imagining it’s hoping to drum up some business because a hell of a lot of work has gone into the development and production of this thing.
Each new Stratos is based on a donor F430 which is then heavily modified to save weight and increase agility and performance. Combined, the carbon body and lightened steel frame save 80 kgs and the wheelbase is then shortened by 20cm to recreate the iconic proportions of the original car. The engine is tweaked and makes 397kW and 519Nm of torque. It’ll get to 100km/h in 3.3 seconds.
