General Motors is back in Australia with the announcement of its new General Motors Speciality Vehicles (GMSV) network.
The first vehicle Aussie buyers will be able to source through the GMSV network is the Silverado 1500 which has been converted to right-hand drive by the Walkinshaw Group in Melbourne. According to GMSV, the Silverado 2500 and the C8 Corvette will follow in 2021.
The Silverado runs a 6.2L V8 making 313kW and 628Nm of torque running through a 10-speed automatic transmission with two-speed transfer case for four-wheel drive low-range. Towing is up to 4500kg braked.
Making the announcement, Joanne Stogiannis, Director at GMSV said, “We have launched with over fifty GM Specialty Vehicles dealers and look forward to adding more. Our GMSV dealers are now open for business in Australia and New Zealand. We can’t wait to see the first Silverados being driven out of our GMSV showrooms.
“We believe there is significant opportunity in Australia and New Zealand for our iconic North American vehicles to compete in niche segments.”
The Chevy Silverado 1500 will go up against the likes of the RAM 1500 which with all its variants combined managed sales of more than 200 vehicles in October and more than 2600 year to date. So, there’s clearly an appetite for large American utes but it will be interesting to see how forgiving Australians will be…
