Hyundai has launched its new dedicated EV brand, Ioniq, with plans to roll out electric sedans and SUVs from 2021.
With car makers racing headlong into electrification of their vehicles, Hyundai has announced the launch of its dedicated EV brand, Ioniq. The marque plans to roll out a range of electric vehicles including sedans and SUVs from 2021. Indeed, by 2024, the brand has said it will have three new electric vehicles in the market with more to follow.
โThe IONIQ brand will change the paradigm of EV customer experience,โ said Wonhong Cho, Executive Vice President and Global Chief Marketing Officer at Hyundai Motor Company. โWith a new emphasis on connected living, we will offer electrified experiences integral to an eco-friendly lifestyle.โ
The word Ioniq is the fusion of Ion and Unique and was originally used to name Hyundaiโs multi-drivetrain vehicle (hybrid electric, plug-in hybrid and battery electric), Ioniq. Now it will be an eco-system of vehicles.
The vehicles launched under the Ioniq brand name will all carr numbers, even numbers for sedans and odd numbers for SUVs, these will be Ioniq 5, 6 and 7. The first model under the Ioniq brand will be the Ioniq 5 mid-size CUV that will launch in early 2021. Ioniq 5 is based on the concept EV โ45โ, which Hyundai unveiled at the International Motor Show (IAA) 2019 in Frankfurt.
In 2022, Hyundai will introduce the Ioniq 6 sedan, which is based on the companyโs latest concept EV โProphecyโ, unveiled in March; followed by Ioniq 7, a large SUV in early 2024.
All Ioniq models will be built on the brandโs Electric Global Modular Platform (E-GMP), that will enable fast charging capability and plentiful driving range.
The EV-dedicated platform will allow โHyundai to reimagine the vehicle interior as โsmart living spaceโ with highly adjustable seats, wireless connectivity and unique features such as a glove box designed as drawers. The platform paradigm shift will extend into the user interfaces that will be simple, intuitive and ergonomically designed to help occupants feel at ease,โ the brand said.
In addition to the launch of its Ioniq brand, Hyundai has said it plans to sell 1 million battery electric vehicles by 2025 to take a 10% share of the market and that it aims to become the third-largest maker of โeco-friendly vehicles by 2025โ.
