The 2021 Toyota Yaris Cross has been confirmed for Australia offering a raised ride height and on-demand all-wheel drive – it’ll be here later this year.
Australia’s love affair with SUVs doesn’t look like slowing down…sure, sales are falling but we’re still buying SUVs hand over fist. The Yaris Cross is based on the next-generation Yaris and joins Toyota’s other small SUVs, C-HR and RAV4, and it will offer both hybrid and petrol drivetrains.
Like the new-generation Yaris, which will be out soon, the Yaris Cross is based on Toyota’s GA-B compact car platform, but the Yaris Cross offers 30mm more ground clearance and it’s both taller and wider – 90mm and 20mm respectively. It will be the first application of Toyota’s new 1.5-litre three-cylinder petrol engine, and will be available with on-demand all-wheel drive that will only activate when slip is detected.
Following a digital global announcement, Toyota Australia Vice President Sales and Marketing Sean Hanley said, “Yaris Cross is a stylish and flexible vehicle for people with active lifestyles who appreciate the strength, space and high-riding qualities of an SUV at a scale that suits their daily need to negotiate city streets and laneways”. Toyota Australia is keeping quiet on key features and pricing. Stay tuned.
