Here’s the all-new 2022 GMC Hummer EV, yep, it’s electric and it can walk like a crab when you’re off-road. Check it out.
That’s right, the 2022 Hummer EV can walk like a crab…it’s the only 4×4 that can do that. How? At low speeds the front and back wheels can turn in the same direction allowing diagonal drive. Amazing.
But that ain’t the only party trick. Riding on air suspension, like, say, the Land Rover Defender, the Hummer can raise itself by up to 149mm to clear obstacles when you’re driving off-road. And while it rides on 35-inch Goodyear Wrangler Territory M/T tyres as standard; it can take 37s.
There are underbody cameras offering ‘virtual spotter’ views to help navigate obstacles off-road and not only are the cameras protected they also boast a wash function. And there are thick steel plates underneath the Hummer to keep it protected when bashing around off-road. You’ll be able to remove the roof too.
“We had one goal for HUMMER EV: Build the most capable factory truck – ever,” said Al Oppenheiser, GMC HUMMER EV chief engineer. “It’s an absolute off-road beast with a unique e4WD drive system that provides maneuverability unlike anything GM has ever offered before.”
GMC is calling its first Hummer EV, Edition 1 and it’ll get a three-motor e4WD layout that GM is suggesting will thump out 1000hp (750kW) and a staggering 15,600Nm of torque. And to charge the batteries super fast, the battery system can switch from parallel to series charging to pack in 160 kilometre of range in just 10 minutes from a 350kW DC fast charger. GM is suggesting a range of up to 560km.
And the Hummer will be able to go hands-free thanks to GM’s Super Cruise systems “offering hands-free driving on more than 322,000km of enabled roads, and a new automatic lane changing feature, where the system can determine when a lane change is optimal and initiate the manoeuvre, while following signaling protocols”.
“This innovative truck comes to market with speed and purpose, bringing GM another step closer to an all-electric future,” said Mark Reuss, president of General Motors. “With our Ultium Drive architecture as the foundation for an exceptionally broad range of performance, HUMMER EV is perfect for the customer who wants capability, efficiency and performance.”
The Hummer EV Edition 1 will list from USD$112,595 which is around $160,000.
