The all-new Isuzu D-Max and Toyota Yaris have scored five-star ANCAP ratings after passing an expanded range of tests.
ANCAP is getting tougher on vehicle safety and the new Isuzu D-Max and Toyota Yaris are the first vehicles this year to be tested under the tougher criteria. For instance, the fitment of centre airbags and autonomous braking systems that can brake when turning in front of an oncoming vehicle. And even the size of the vehicle’s snout and the risk it poses to oncoming vehicles is being assessed and penalised. And all vehicles now tested by ANCAP need to be supplied with ISO compliant rescue sheets to assist with first responder response time in the event of a collision.
According to ANCAP, the new D-Max scored well across all key areas of assessment and was praised for the fitment of a centre airbag – a first for the ute segment as well as autonomous emergency braking (AEB) with pedestrian and cyclist detection, multi-collision braking and active lane-keeping support standard across the range.
ANCAP added that the D-Max scored full points for adult protection in the side impact and pole test. Full points were also achieved for the protection of child occupants in the frontal offset and side impact scenarios.
However, in the new, upgraded frontal offset test with a mobile barrier representing an oncoming vehicle the D-Max copped a marginal score for protection of the driver’s chest and left femur. And, the D-Max also copped a penalty because of its size and the potential risk it poses to occupants in other vehicles. Ouch.
The Toyota Yaris, however, copped no such penalty because of its tiny-tot size. It scored full marks for the protection of adult occupants in both the side impact and oblique pole tests, and for the protection of child occupants in the side impact scenario.
“The Yaris introduces some of the most sophisticated passive and active safety systems – including dual centre airbags and AEB with Turn Assistance which are features that are being seen for the first time in 2020,” said ANCAP Director – Communications & Advocacy, Rhianne Robson.
