The covers were whipped off the BMW S 1000 R last night with BMW Motorrad saying itโll come to Oz next year.
Meet the new BMW S 1000 R which will arrive here around the middle of next year and pricing will be announced closer to then. Right, thatโs the boring stuff out of the way.
The S 1000 R gets an โacceleration-optimisedโ engine boasting 121kW and 114Nm of torque. It weighs just 199kg so it should get along just fine. Some of the engineering from the S 1000 RR has been applied to the one-R-less S 1000 R including a new 5kg lighter drivetrain, with tweaked gear ratios, and engine drag torque control for the first time.
To reduce noise (what?!) the engineers lengthened the gear ratios in 4th, 5th and 6th gear…thatโll help reduce fuel consumption too.
The bikeโs frame is also based on the S 1000 RR with the engine playing an integral part in the strength of the frame. The new frame is narrower than the old bike too which should make it more comfortable to ride.
The new S 1000 R is equipped as standard with Dynamic Traction Control DTC, ABS Pro with banking angle optimisation and the three riding modes: Rain, Road and Dynamic.
Styling is borrowed from the S 1000 RR with designers focussing on the traditional nose down, tail up look. Final specs and pricing will be announced next year.
